Driver Charged After Error Leaves Cyclist Hospitalised for 3 Days

A South Melbourne cyclist was riding his regular route along Clarendon Street when a car pulled out directly in front of him. With no time to stop or swerve, he collided head-on - breaking three ribs and his shoulder blade.

Thankfully, a police car happened to be driving past in the opposite direction and stopped to assist.

“I don’t have a driver’s licence - I ride everywhere. I’ve had Cycliq front and rear cameras for years now, and this is exactly why. You can’t always trust drivers, and the footage gives me legal security.”

Despite the severity of the crash, the rider says incidents like this feel inevitable at times, especially during sunrise or sunset when visibility is compromised.

He believes safety on the roads starts with two key things: law enforcement and infrastructure.

“Drivers ignore the 1-metre passing rule constantly. That law exists for a reason - police need to start enforcing it.”

The police officer at the scene indicated that charges would be laid against the driver. The cyclist, who spent three days in hospital, plans to follow up once recovered.

His advice to others is simple:

“Always wear a helmet. Wear bright clothing. Use lights. Ride in groups - and always have cameras front and rear. They’re your backup.”

Why Recording Matters

It's hard to believe some of the crazy behaviour that happens on the road, the best defence is crystal clear video that leaves no room for debate.

You know the type. “I’m sure they wouldn’t have done that” or “No-one would be that stupid” … except, unfortunately, we know different.

As well as stopping another ‘he-said, she-said’ defence dead in its tracks, having video evidence helps everyone understand the how and why of those “what-the-hell-just-happened” moments.

When things go wrong, video gives you the power to show exactly what happened. And when drivers know they might be recorded, they’re more likely to think twice before making a dangerous choice.

Feel safe. Record your ride. With the dashcam engineered for cyclists.
