After over 40 years on the road, one UK cyclist thought he’d seen it all - until close passes started becoming a regular feature on his rides.
“I was t-boned by an uninsured driver back in 2007. Since then, I’ve become hyper-aware of how quickly things can go wrong.”
Three years ago, he bought a Fly6 camera to record his rear wheel. Then a Fly12 for the front. “I upload every ride now. It’s opened my eyes to just how close vehicles get - and how quiet they are. You don’t always hear them coming.”
In one recent incident, despite running flashing high-pulse front and rear lights, a lorry passed dangerously close. He reported it to Avon & Somerset Police, only to hit a frustrating wall of process - no collision meant no urgency. His footage sat untouched for weeks. Only persistence and clarity finally got it in front of the right unit.
“The system’s flawed,” he says. “But the cameras prove what actually happened. Without them, it’s just your word against theirs.”
He says he feels most vulnerable on narrow country lanes and near damaged kerbs - where drain covers and potholes force him out into the road.
His advice?
“Record your rides. Take control of your space. Don’t hug the kerb to make it easier for drivers to squeeze past - it’s not worth it.”
“And for goodness sake, wear a helmet.”
Why Recording Matters
It's hard to believe some of the crazy behaviour that happens on the road, the best defence is crystal clear video that leaves no room for debate.
You know the type. “I’m sure they wouldn’t have done that” or “No-one would be that stupid” … except, unfortunately, we know different.
As well as stopping another ‘he-said, she-said’ defence dead in its tracks, having video evidence helps everyone understand the how and why of those “what-the-hell-just-happened” moments.
When things go wrong, video gives you the power to show exactly what happened. And when drivers know they might be recorded, they’re more likely to think twice before making a dangerous choice.
Feel safe. Record your ride. With the dashcam engineered for cyclists.
