While riding on a quiet lane with good visibility, a Scottish cyclist experienced yet another close pass. A car approached head-on, failed to slow, and veered dangerously close despite the cyclist doing everything possible to avoid it.
“It was a textbook example of what not to do. I slowed down, moved over - but they didn’t.”
That’s why he records every ride using a reliable front camera.
“Under Scottish law, it’s almost impossible to prove dangerous driving without corroboration. A camera is my only objective witness.”
The frustration? He hasn’t reported this incident - yet. Not because he doesn’t want to, but because the process in Scotland is burdensome and outdated. Without an independent witness, even video evidence often isn’t enough.
He believes it’s time for change -
- Make minimum passing distances a legal requirement (in this jurisdiction)
- Allow high-quality video to stand alone as evidence
- Create a public video reporting portal like those in England & Wales
- Enforce laws with consistency
- Educate drivers on cyclist vulnerability
He feels most at risk during high-speed overtakes, at junctions, or around large vehicles with no safe separation. “These moments leave no room for error. We’re the most exposed road users.
His advice?
“Wear a helmet. Use a camera - always. Even if the law fails you, your footage still speaks volumes."
Why Recording Matters
It's hard to believe some of the crazy behaviour that happens on the road, the best defence is crystal clear video that leaves no room for debate.
You know the type. “I’m sure they wouldn’t have done that” or “No-one would be that stupid” … except, unfortunately, we know different.
As well as stopping another ‘he-said, she-said’ defence dead in its tracks, having video evidence helps everyone understand the how and why of those “what-the-hell-just-happened” moments.
When things go wrong, video gives you the power to show exactly what happened. And when drivers know they might be recorded, they’re more likely to think twice before making a dangerous choice.
Feel safe. Record your ride. With the dashcam engineered for cyclists.
