A quiet Sunday afternoon ride turned into a frightening near-miss for one cyclist when a box truck drifted across the double yellow line and clipped his shoulder on a low-traffic county highway.
Fortunately, the entire incident was captured on his Cycliq camera.
The cyclist was three miles into a ride on a two-lane road, riding in the center of the lane for visibility, when the truck crossed into his path. With oncoming traffic ahead, the driver failed to slow or move over, instead grazing the rider with the mirror’s fender cover.
The cyclist managed to stay upright and watched as the truck pulled over briefly - then fled the scene.
Thanks to the rear camera, the license plate was clearly visible. The Ohio State Highway Patrol, who responded, used the footage to trace the rental vehicle and identify the driver. The investigation revealed the driver had been distracted by a digital device at the time of the incident and was also driving on a suspended license.
The result? Multiple charges. The driver was required to plead guilty to:
-
Lane violation
-
Use of a digital device while driving
-
Leaving the scene of a personal injury accident
-
Driving under suspension
The court issued a $300 fine and 10 days confinement. When the driver failed to appear, a bench warrant was issued.
The rider, who regularly uses his Fly6 and Fly12 cameras, credits the footage - and platforms like UpRide - for driving accountability:
“The camera caught the scumbag who hit me. I hope UpRide helps raise awareness and leads to real action.”
He continues to advocate for better public infrastructure, clearer signage, and stronger enforcement:
“We need protected lanes. Public education. And prosecution that actually protects vulnerable users.”
His advice to fellow cyclists? Simple and firm:
“Helmet. Visible clothing. Take your lane. Run a camera.”
Why Recording Matters
It's hard to believe some of the crazy behaviour that happens on the road, the best defence is crystal clear video that leaves no room for debate.
You know the type. “I’m sure they wouldn’t have done that” or “No-one would be that stupid” … except, unfortunately, we know different.
As well as stopping another ‘he-said, she-said’ defence dead in its tracks, having video evidence helps everyone understand the how and why of those “what-the-hell-just-happened” moments.
When things go wrong, video gives you the power to show exactly what happened. And when drivers know they might be recorded, they’re more likely to think twice before making a dangerous choice.Feel safe. Record your ride.
