When two cyclists were riding their usual route into the city - a stretch of road with no dedicated bike lane but heavy cyclist traffic - they captured a serious close-call incident on their rear and front bike cameras.
The footage, recorded using a Fly6 Pro and Fly12 Sport, showed a Mazda driver failing to give way. The rider, who often feels vulnerable around drivers with a “cyclists shouldn’t be on the road” mentality, reported feeling especially unsafe during the encounter.
What followed was swift action.
The rider submitted the footage to WA Police, who confirmed it was a fineable offence. The result a fineable offence of $150 and three demerit points. Police also contacted the cyclist to confirm they were taking steps to prosecute and asked if they would be willing to appear in court if required.
Beyond the fine, the footage was also forwarded to the local council. As a result, new “Watch for Cyclists” signage is now being considered for the area.
The cyclist, a young woman who wears high-visibility clothing and always rides with lights on, says she hopes the incident helps shift attitudes on the road:
“We’re not trying to be in anyone’s way - we just want to get home safely too.”
She believes accountability is key to improving road safety, and encourages others to use video evidence to report dangerous behaviour.
“You never know when someone won’t look properly. Defensive riding and recording your rides can make all the difference.”
Why Recording Matters
It's hard to believe some of the crazy behaviour that happens on the road, the best defence is crystal clear video that leaves no room for debate.
You know the type. “I’m sure they wouldn’t have done that” or “No-one would be that stupid” … except, unfortunately, we know different.
As well as stopping another ‘he-said, she-said’ defence dead in its tracks, having video evidence helps everyone understand the how and why of those “what-the-hell-just-happened” moments.
When things go wrong, video gives you the power to show exactly what happened. And when drivers know they might be recorded, they’re more likely to think twice before making a dangerous choice.Feel safe. Record your ride.
