One cyclist was knocked unconscious in a crash he can’t remember - but thankfully, his bike camera remembered everything.
The driver claimed the rider had been “all over the road.” Initially, police were ready to dismiss the case based on that account alone. But when the rider later brought in footage from his Cycliq camera, the narrative changed completely.
“If I hadn’t had the camera, the police weren’t interested. The footage was the only reason any action was taken.”
The video clearly showed the driver was at fault. As a result, the driver lost their licence for 12 months and was ordered to pay nearly $1,000 in damages, repaid slowly over the following year.
The cyclist, who suffered a head injury and no memory of the crash, continues to advocate for safer infrastructure:
“The only real solution is separated cycling infrastructure. But most cities are still too car-centric to prioritise safety for riders.”
He uses UpRide to raise awareness of dangerous roads and incidents, and encourages others to do the same.
“It’s a good place to post videos of problems so they’re harder to ignore.”
His advice to fellow cyclists is cautious but realistic:
“Follow the road rules, and watch out - not just for drivers, but for people on foot or other riders who aren’t paying attention.”
Why Recording Matters
It's hard to believe some of the crazy behaviour that happens on the road, the best defence is crystal clear video that leaves no room for debate.
You know the type. “I’m sure they wouldn’t have done that” or “No-one would be that stupid” … except, unfortunately, we know different.
As well as stopping another ‘he-said, she-said’ defence dead in its tracks, having video evidence helps everyone understand the how and why of those “what-the-hell-just-happened” moments.
When things go wrong, video gives you the power to show exactly what happened. And when drivers know they might be recorded, they’re more likely to think twice before making a dangerous choice.Feel safe. Record your ride.
