Cyclist T was riding home one night in Norfolk, Virginia when he was ambushed by four individuals trying to steal his bike. One threatened him with a firearm, while another attempted to pepper spray him - but the spray blew back in their faces.
“It was just me and the four suspects. I ride this route to work every day. I won’t stop riding… but now I look over my shoulder a little more.”
Despite the terrifying experience, T had his rear camera - the Cycliq Fly6 - rolling the whole time. He’s been recording his rides for nearly a decade, ever since he was hit head-on in 2015.
Thanks to the footage, police were able to identify all four attackers. T shared the video with detectives, who circulated it to local school resource officers. Within days, the suspects were in custody.
“It’s good to know that if anything happens, I have proof.”
T says he supports platforms like UpRide because they give cyclists a voice and a way to take action.
His advice?
“Get a camera. It could make all the difference.”
Why Recording Matters
It's hard to believe some of the crazy behaviour that happens on the road, the best defence is crystal clear video that leaves no room for debate.
You know the type. “I’m sure they wouldn’t have done that” or “No-one would be that stupid” … except, unfortunately, we know different.
As well as stopping another ‘he-said, she-said’ defence dead in its tracks, having video evidence helps everyone understand the how and why of those “what-the-hell-just-happened” moments.
When things go wrong, video gives you the power to show exactly what happened. And when drivers know they might be recorded, they’re more likely to think twice before making a dangerous choice.
Feel safe. Record your ride. With the dashcam engineered for cyclists.
